Dentures are a classic solution for replacing multiple teeth or your entire smile.
They’re composed of artificial teeth (typically made from porcelain or composite resin) that are attached to a gum-colored acrylic base that’s held in place with suction, adhesive, or dental implants.
Dentures have become much more advanced in recent years, and today’s dentures look more natural and feel more comfortable than ever.
Dentures improve your smile, appearance, and overall oral health in a number of different ways, like:
Dentures can also replace troublesome teeth to benefit your overall oral health.
Dentures can be either complete or partial.
Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in your jaw. They’re used if one or both of your jaws don’t have any teeth or if you’re planning on having your remaining teeth extracted. They’re typically held in place by suction or adhesive, but dentures can now be secured in your mouth with dental implants for an even more comfortable hold and added health benefits.
Partial dentures are used when you need to replace multiple teeth but still have some healthy teeth left in your smile. They’re similar in form to complete dentures, but their base has openings for the spots in your jaw where you still have natural teeth, allowing those teeth to come through and work side-by-side with the artificial teeth.
At first, your dentures might feel slightly loose, bulky, or awkward. This is totally natural, as the muscles in your mouth need time to work with your dentures and hold them in place. During this adjustment period, you might notice an increased flow of saliva. In some rare cases, you might feel temporary nausea or soreness.
These feelings of discomfort typically fade within a few weeks or months. Once you acclimate, your dentures will actually make your mouth feel better, as they improve your ability to chew and speak properly!
