How to Perform a Self-Exam to Look for Oral Cancer

Dentist explaining oral cancer screening results on a tablet to a female patient, emphasizing early detection and prevention. Your mouth is more than just a tool for eating and speaking; it's an important part of your overall health. Just like you check your skin for unusual moles or spots, it's also important to regularly examine your mouth for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection is key to successful treatment, so knowing how to perform a self-exam can be a life-saving habit. This guide will walk you through the steps of a simple oral cancer self-exam you can do at home.

Why is Oral Cancer Screening Important?

Oral cancer, like other cancers, can be serious if not caught early. It can affect any part of your mouth, including your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and the roof and floor of your mouth. Regular self-exams, combined with professional dental checkups, can help identify suspicious changes early, when treatment is often more effective. Remember, while a self-exam is a good starting point, it is not a substitute for regular professional dental evaluations.

When Should You Perform a Self-Exam?

Aim to perform a self-exam at least once a month. Choose a consistent time, like the first day of the month, to help you remember. If you notice something unusual, don't panic, but do schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

How to Perform a Self-Exam: A Step-by-Step Guide

1~ Gather Your Supplies: You'll need a mirror, good lighting, and clean hands.
2~ Visual Inspection: Begin by looking at your face in the mirror. Check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or changes in skin color. Pay attention to your lips and the skin around your mouth.
3~ Examine Your Lips: Pull your upper lip up and look inside. Use your fingers to feel for any bumps, lumps, or sore spots. Repeat this process for your lower lip.
4~ Check Your Cheeks: Use your finger to pull your cheek away from your teeth and look inside. Check for any red or white patches, sores, or lumps. Gently feel the inside of your cheek with your fingers. Repeat on the other side.
5~ Inspect Your Gums: Look at your gums, both upper and lower. Check for any swelling, discoloration, sores, or bleeding. Gently feel your gums with your finger.
6~ Examine Your Tongue: Stick out your tongue and look at the top surface. Check for any changes in color or texture, sores, or lumps. Gently pull your tongue to the left and then to the right, examining the sides. Use a piece of gauze to hold the tip of your tongue and examine the underside, looking for any abnormalities.
7~ Check the Roof of Your Mouth: Tilt your head back and open your mouth wide. Look at the roof of your mouth, checking for any unusual color changes, sores, or lumps. Gently feel the area with your finger.
8~ Examine the Floor of Your Mouth: Lift your tongue up to the roof of your mouth. Look at the floor of your mouth, checking for any unusual color changes, sores, or lumps. Gently feel the area with your finger.
9~ Palpate Your Neck: Gently feel along both sides of your neck for any enlarged lymph nodes or unusual lumps.

What to Look For

Be on the lookout for the following:
•  Sores that don't heal within two weeks
•  Red or white patches
•  Lumps, bumps, or thickened areas
•  Pain or tenderness
•  Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
•  Numbness in the mouth or tongue
•  Changes in your bite

Oral Care and Prevention

Maintaining good oral care is crucial for overall health and can potentially lower the risk of oral cancer. This includes:
•  Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing daily.
•  Avoiding tobacco use in all forms.
•  Limiting alcohol consumption.
•  Eating a healthy diet.

While oral care can help reduce risk factors, certain situations might require restoration dentistry. It's important to discuss all aspects of your oral health with your dentist.

When to See Your Dentist

If you find anything unusual during your self-exam, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away. Remember, early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Regular dental checkups are also important for identifying potential problems early on. Your dentist can perform a more thorough examination and determine if further testing is needed.
