Common Pains to Expect After Getting Your First Filling

Posted on 3/16/2026 by Dr. Farah Ahmad, DDS
Dental fillings. So, you just got your first dental filling! Congratulations on taking care of your oral care and investing in your long-term dental health. Restoration dentistry is a key part of keeping your smile bright and functional. Now that the procedure is done, you might be wondering what to expect in the days following your appointment. It's completely normal to experience some discomfort, and understanding what's happening can help you manage it effectively. Let's walk through some common sensations you might encounter after receiving your first dental filling.

Sensitivity to Temperature

One of the most frequent complaints after a filling is sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This can manifest as a sharp, brief pain when you eat or drink something very hot or very cold. The good news is this sensitivity is usually temporary.

Why does this happen? The nerve inside your tooth has been slightly irritated by the drilling process necessary to prepare the tooth for the filling. Think of it like a minor bruise to the nerve. As the nerve heals, the sensitivity will typically subside.

What can you do? Avoid extremely hot or cold foods and drinks for a few days. Using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth can also help to block pain signals. If the sensitivity persists for more than a couple of weeks or becomes severe, contact your dental professional.

Soreness in the Gums

It's also common to experience some gum soreness around the filled tooth. This can be due to the local anesthetic injection or from the placement of a matrix band, which is a small metal or plastic band used to help shape the filling while it's being placed.

What can you do? Gentle rinsing with warm salt water several times a day can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. A soft-bristled toothbrush will also be gentle on your gums as you brush.

Pain When Biting Down

You might notice some discomfort when you bite down on the filled tooth, especially if the filling is new. This could be because the filling is slightly higher than the surrounding teeth. Even a tiny difference in height can cause pressure and discomfort.

What can you do? If the pain is significant or persists for more than a few days, it’s important to contact your dentist. They can easily adjust the filling to ensure it fits perfectly with your bite. Trying to ignore a high filling can sometimes lead to other problems, such as jaw pain.

General Tooth Soreness

Besides temperature sensitivity, you might feel a general soreness or ache in the filled tooth. This is again related to the irritation of the nerve during the procedure. It's similar to the feeling you might get after a strenuous workout – your tooth has simply been worked!

What can you do? Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can usually manage this type of discomfort effectively. Follow the instructions on the packaging and consult with your doctor if you have any concerns about taking these medications.

Understanding the Healing Process

Remember that getting a first dental filling is a process, and it takes time for your tooth to fully heal. Most of these symptoms are temporary and will resolve on their own within a few days to a couple of weeks. By understanding what to expect, you can manage any discomfort and ensure a smooth recovery. Maintain good oral care practices, and don't hesitate to reach out to your dentist if you have any questions or concerns. Your smile will thank you!
